The full title of PCOS is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome as most people know. However, there is a slight issue with this classification, you can have PCOS if you have enough of the prerequisite symptoms – but having ovarian cysts is actually not needed to be classed as having PCOS! Mind blowing right? Most women however do have cysts and many of them but the condition of PCOS is not defined by the cysts they have found. Instead is really is a complex hormonal, metabolic issue that has many facets. The complexity of this issue means that some health-care providers can also misdiagnose, or be unaware of the full issues.
All of this has been talked about recently at a conference where PCOS Diagnostic Criteria was discussed. As one fo the doctors put it “It is time to expeditiously assign a name that reflects the complex metabolic, hypothalamic, pituitary, ovarian, and adrenal interactions that characterize the syndrome,” – Much better put that I can do!
What frightens me is the insinuation that health-care providers really do not know how to diagnose PCOS, or that they might diagnose PCOS when it is not PCOS either!
The good thing is that they have setup some research to more fully understand PCOS, how to diagnose it, and this might lead to a change of name that would reflect this complex condition.
I just have one question … do I need to change the name of my website if they do this!!!
